First Annual Carl Rogerson Memorial Roundup
The First Annual Carl Rogerson Memorial Roundup No-2-Pros Tournament took place on February 10, 2023 in Clearwater. Carl is remembered fondly for his many years of dedicated volunteerism at the Club, especially as a coach for new players. Here is a memorial that was given for Carl at the tournament by Club Vice President Nellie Daum:
Carl Rogerson was one of the nicest men I’ve ever known.
When he walked into a room his presence was felt immediately. He was well over six feet tall, then you add his ever present cowboy hat and boots and he was even taller. Add in that meticulously groomed, snow white mustache and you knew someone special had arrived.
Carl loved shuffleboard and he loved to teach new players. When a No 2 Pros came around, he wouldn’t pick the best amateur to play with. He’d pick the newest, so they could get the “tournament experience.”
When he and his wife Ella left to head back north at this time last year, he left an envelope full of money saying he wanted it to go to sponsorship of a No 2 Pros tournament. Jim and I sat down and started looking at where we could put it the following season. That’s when the Carl Rogerson Roundup was born. We decided on this date to commemorate the time he was last seen here.
Then in October last year, we received a check for his membership and more money for a tournament. We decided now the Roundup would become annual through 2024. The next day we got word Carl had passed. All of us who knew him were devastated. We the had to add the ‘memorial’ to the tournament name.
As you play today, keep Carl in your thoughts. I’ve got a feeling he will be out there playing right along with us.
Carl, we love you! We miss you! Rest in peace, dear friend.
